Baby Audio has wowed many people with its cool effects and sleek UIs over the last couple of years. If you want a new effect to spice up your tracks, you can get Baby Audio’s Super VHS plugin for $19.00 at Audio Plugin Deals.

Super VHS works on macOS and Windows (VST/VST3/AU/AAX).
The plugin is supposed to transport your sound back to the 80’s by way of warm tape saturation, pitch drift, reverb and lush chorus, amongst other things.

Super VHS has six effects in total, controlled by one parameter each. Even though this might sound limited on the surface, there’s a lot of things going on under the hood with each effect and the magic is all in the combination.
The key features of Super VHS are controlled by the following knobs:
- “Static” which provides static noise generated by an internal synthesizer if you feel like your track needs some lo-fi vibes.
- “Heat” is an emulation of tape saturation based on consumer grade-tape cassette machines, and we always have room for just one more saturator (right?)
- “Shape” is a sample rate reducer based on dated 8-bit samplers that were big in the 80’s
- “Wash” is an admittedly “bad hall” reverb based on old rack units of dubious quality
- “Drift” is a pitch drift. Need I say more?
- “Magic” is a dark and deep chorus based on the Juno synth. Perfect for both widening and additional depth.
I have to mention that Baby Audio has a cool tradition where they release a new freebie every year. The freebies are isolated and modified parts from their premium plugins.

Anyway, with Super VHS You get an entire toolkit for livening up your individual sounds or degrading your entire mix. If you can’t get enough of lo-fi-fication, wobble, grit and saturated deep chorus with a splash of cheesy reverb, this is definitely the deal for you.
Personally, I think the plugin sounds awesome with a wide variety of use-cases. Even if Super VHS is marketed as a funny flashback to 80’s technology, it’s not “bad” in any sense of the word and still carries lots of modern appeal.
Using the different parts of the plugin sparingly through a mix could be an effective way to create both depth, movement, and separation between the elements of a mix in an intuitive way without spending too much time on either automation or routing.
