Playbeat 4 Review: Combining AI and Creativity in Beatmaking

Audiomodern has released the 4th version of their beatmaking tool, Playbeat, now available as desktop software (macOS/Windows) and an iOS app. After missing the chance to review earlier versions, we’re excited to finally bring you a detailed Playbeat 4 review here on ANR.

Audiomodern’s Playbeat 4 brings a fresh perspective to rhythm creation, combining thoughtful design with features that encourage experimentation. This latest version builds on years of development, offering tools that feel both familiar and innovative (FYI: users of Playbeat 3 can import their previously purchased packs into this new version, which are now available for free.).

From genre-based pattern generation to expanded sample import options, Playbeat 4 invites producers to explore new possibilities in beatmaking without overcomplicating the process

Among other things, this update introduces a new algorithm-based Genre generator, capable of combining up to three genres to create unique sequences. Playbeat 4 uses artificial intelligence to generate evolving drum patterns, offering a fresh approach to rhythm production.

User Interface Overview

The interface has been redesigned, replacing the circular design in the Pattern section and the previous Purple/Grey/Orange color scheme with a color-coded sequencer view. The large orange randomizer button remains at the center of the plugin. While the layout includes many features in one window, it is intuitive and easy to use.

Hovering over (almost) any control in Playbeat 4 displays helpful tooltips that explain its function. That’s really helpful – although the small font size of the interface can be a problem.
We’ve been told a fix is coming soon, so we’re hopeful this will be a problem of the past. We’ll make sure to update this Playbeat 4 review as soon as Audiomodern tackles the issue, stay tuned!

Breaking Down the Controls

Above the central Randomization Button are controls for four modes: RANDOM, REMIX, SMART, and INSTANT.

• RANDOM generates patterns without constraints. When AI is enabled, results are filtered through selected genres.
• REMIX creates variations based on the current pattern.
• SMART uses presets flagged as SMART to generate new patterns.
• INSTANT generates patterns that remain active only while pressed.

To the left of the Randomization Button, users can choose whether playback is triggered by their DAW or a MIDI controller. On the right are export options for MIDI or audio stems, which can be dragged and dropped into a DAW.

Randomization Scope Controls

The randomization scope is controlled by three tabs:

• PATTERN randomizes only the pattern while keeping sounds intact.
• SOUNDS randomizes only the sounds while maintaining the pattern.
• ALL randomizes both pattern and sounds.

A Complexity Slider adjusts how dense patterns will be, ranging from no notes at 0% to maximum density at 100%.

Mixer and Additional Controls

The MIXER provides volume control for each part of a sequence. Adjacent controls include LOCK functionality and a Reset (RST) button. The INFINITY feature generates new sequences after a specified number of passes.

Five tabs below these controls—STEPS, DENSITY, PITCH, VOLUME, and PAN—offer precise adjustments:

• STEPS lets users toggle steps on or off or draw multiple steps.
• DENSITY creates ratcheting effects.
• PITCH adjusts pitch with an option to scale tonal samples.
• VOLUME emphasizes certain sounds over others.
• PAN spaces sounds across the stereo spectrum.

Each parameter works with the Complexity Slider when its panel is active.

Sequencer View and Color Coding

The sequencer view displays eight color-coded rows representing different instruments or parts:

• Red
• Orange
• Yellow
• Green
• Teal
• Blue
• Purple
• Pink

While rows are visually associated with certain instruments (e.g., Bass or Snare), sounds may vary. Soloing each part helps identify its role within a sequence. Steps can be drawn manually by clicking or dragging across multiple steps. Each lane can also play back at different rates.

Multi-Functional Keyboard

At the bottom of the interface is a four-octave piano roll marked by C1–C4:

• C1/C2 audition individual parts or playback patterns.
• C3/C4 store up to 24 variations of sequences or generate groups automatically.

This keyboard supports both typing keyboards and MIDI controllers simultaneously.

AI Features and Parameters

Playbeat 4’s Genre Randomization feature allows users to combine up to three genres for algorithmic processing. The AI Control sits left of the Preset Selector at the top bar. Clicking reveals 35 genre icons sorted alphabetically.

Combining genres produces musical results even when styles seem incompatible—for example, Ambient/Drum & Bass/Industrial combinations yield cohesive yet unexpected patterns. Experimenting with genre combinations often leads to creative breakthroughs.

Workflow Suggestions

Here are some ways to integrate Playbeat 4 into your workflow:

1. Generate drum patterns you like; randomize by Pattern only while retaining sounds. Build song sections by gradually increasing complexity.
2. Combine contrasting genres (e.g., Industrial + World) for unique results.
3. Mute unwanted tracks while building upon elements you enjoy.
4. Adjust BPM according to genre (e.g., 80–110 BPM for Hip Hop; 170 BPM for Drum & Bass).

Playbeat’s AI-driven approach feels natural and avoids common artifacting issues found in other AI-driven tools.

Last but not least, Playbeat 4 includes MIDI out functionality (on iOS only via IAP), making it possible to use the software to drive external drum machines, whether hardware or software. This feature allows users to send MIDI patterns generated by Playbeat 4 to other devices or plugins, offering flexibility in integrating it into a broader production setup.

Samples and Smart Flag Feature

Samples can now be imported into Playbeat and used in presets flagged as SMART. While individual samples cannot be flagged as SMART, presets created using favorite samples can be marked accordingly.

The preset library includes over 800 options—some adhering to genre conventions while others explore new territory (e.g., Analog series with Industrial vibes). Users can also tag presets with genre labels to train Playbeat’s internal AI engine further.

Between AI genres, SMART presets, regular randomization parameters, sample import options, and manual sequencing capabilities, Playbeat offers significant creative flexibility.

User Experience and Feedback

Playbeat’s AI features provide insight into genre-specific drum patterns without requiring external MIDI packs or loops—a cost-saving advantage. The ability to insert Playbeat as a MIDI FX plugin adds versatility across workflows.

The trial version includes many features despite locking some options like saving presets and sample import/export functionality—making it ideal for testing before purchasing.

The design minimizes menu diving while maintaining clarity even when scaled down. Drag-and-drop exporting is straightforward, making it accessible even for beginners learning sequencing fundamentals.

While working on this Playbeat 4 review, I found myself repeatedly surprised by how quickly it sparked new ideas.
